Man Accused of Fondling Child's Breast at Lodge

Victim's quick report leads to detention, arrest.

A Cleburne man was arrested Friday at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine on a charge of indecency with a child.

The victim, an 8-year-old girl, told her parents that Michael Shaw fondled her breast while she was waiting to go down a water slide.

"(She) felt uncomfortable. He fondled her breasts and she immediately down and told her parents," Grapevine police Sgt. Kim Smith said.

Shaw was detained by the lodge's security personnel within an hour of the incident and arrested.

Police said Shaw also touched two other girls at the indoor water park.

"He spoke to them and brushed up against them on their leg," Smith said.

It was not immediately clear how Shaw gained access to the water park, an area that is only for hotel guests.

Jacques Borderlon, a Great Wolf Lodge guest, said a wristband was needed to get into the water park.

"This is your room key and access to the water park, and so without the bands, you can't get in," he said. "They don't allow (it). There's only one entrance, so they monitor it."

Grapevine police said the incident is the first case of its kind since the hotel opened a year ago.

"I think that just happened to be a fluke in this case," said Lisa McGowan, of the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We'll be monitoring that a lot more."

“Providing a safe family environment is our top priority," Great Wolf Lodge spokeswoman Amanda Sawyer said in a statement released Monday. "We are working closely with local law enforcement and the matter is in their hands."

Shaw, 32, was released from custody on Saturday after he posted a $10,000 bond. He was charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact, a second-degree felony.

There was no answer at Shaw's home on Monday.
