Man Accused of Driving Over Dallas Officer Is in U.S. Illegally: Officials

Immigration officials said a 29-year-old man who ran over and injured an off-duty officer before being shot by police outside a Dallas nightclub Monday is in the country illegally and has been deported three times. [[343467302,C]]

After being escorted out of the Kalua Discotheque, police said Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios backed into a uniformed Dallas police officer working security at the club, then put the car into drive and hit a second uniformed off-duty officer — later identified as Sr. Cpl. Edmundo "Ed" Lujan — and dragged him about 15 feet, police said.

Police said the incident prompted Sgt. Shannon Browning and Sr. Cpl. Antonio Barrientos to fire at Gonzalez-Rios, who was wounded in the arm.

Lujan suffered numerous broken bones and a lacerated scalp, according to authorities.

Police said Gonzalez-Rios was released from the hospital Tuesday and is being detained on immigration hold in the Dallas County jail. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney or anyone who could speak on his behalf.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Carl Rusnok said Gonzalez-Rios has been deported from the U.S. three times.
