Mail Sorter Accused of Taking Money From Gift Cards

Federal authorities say a South Texas postal worker has been arrested for opening customer mail and stealing money contained in gift cards.

The Monitor reports Wednesday that Jose Mario Cavazos was arrested at the U.S. Postal Service's processing and distribution center in McAllen.

He appeared in federal court Tuesday and ordered held without bail pending a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

Postal inspectors began investigating Cavazos in April after receiving tips that he was opening mail and taking money while working as a sorter at the processing center.

A surveillance operation last week allegedly revealed Cavazos removing contents. Investigators said dye packs subsequently were placed in envelopes and Cavazos opened one, causing his hands to become stained.

A call to a listing for Cavazos in McAllen went unanswered.
