Longtime AP Exec To Head TCU Journalism School

John Lumpkin, an Associated Press vice president and former Texas chief of bureau for the news cooperative, will retire next June to become director of the journalism school at Texas Christian University.

He and the school made the announcement today.

Lumpkin, based in Dallas, currently oversees AP services for newspaper markets in the United States and Latin America. Before joining the AP's U.S. Newspaper Markets management team in 2003, he served as the news cooperative's Dallas bureau chief for more than two decades.

He joined AP in 1971 in Dallas after reporting for the Richmond, Virginia, Times-Dispatch and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He served as Dallas assistant bureau chief, then bureau chief in North Carolina, Iowa and Nebraska before returning to Dallas as bureau chief in 1982.

He will take over at the Schieffer School of Journalism on June 1.
