A group of Plano citizens says it now has enough signatures to try to repeal a controversial growth plan, but even with the signatures the fight is not over.
On Tuesday, the group, Plano Future, delivered 4,057 signatures to the city secretary, more than double the amount needed to put the issue on a ballot for a referendum.
Plano Future organizers want voters to decide whether the Plano Tomorrow plan should pass, not the city council, which approved it last month.
By law, the group had 30 days to deliver at least 1,861 signatures.
"It took us only two weeks to acquire 4,057 (signatures) and we're really kind of pleased and amazed at the way the citizens have come together," spokesperson Alan Samara said.
Despite the effort, the city attorney said state law prohibits zoning ordinances from going to a referendum vote.
The city will discuss the petition at its next council meeting Nov. 23.
