Lake Leaders Urge Holiday Safety Amid Flooding

The Army Corps of Engineers are stressing safety at area lakes this weekend as folks celebrate Memorial Day and several parks remain flooded.

On Tuesday Corps leaders and park rangers said they are continuing to monitor North Texas lakes as most remain above their flood stage.

Lewisville Lake is now more than seven and a half feet above flood stage and continues to rise with additional rain and the continued release of waters from upstream.

Army Corps Brig. Gen. Dave Hill said they are still releasing water from Lake Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine to help control the levels and prevent damage nearby, although that does mean some flooding in the green space and parks.

"We expect we'll evaluate that in the $1 billion price range in terms of damages avoided,” said Hill.

With those efforts continuing they encourage lake goers to be on-guard and understand the lakes are not currently the waters many are used to, containing new obstacles inside, changed currents and more creatures roaming about than usual.

They ask folks respect park and boat ramp closures, continue to use life jackets and observe boating safety markers and practices.

The Corps reports 13 deaths on their lakes last year, most they said could have been prevented by a life jacket.
