KwanzaaFest Returns After One Year Hiatus

KwanzaaFest is open again this weekend in Dallas.

The annual event started in 1990 but was cancelled last year as its founder, John Wiley Price, faced a federal corruption trial.

This year, the festival at Fair Park returned and the timing couldn't be better for one Dallas family.

Free health screenings are a focus for this year's event.

Rashawn Harris Rowland and her 16-year-old son Gabriel just lost their apartment, and her health insurance.

“It’s just really stressful and hard right now because I'm used to having my own,” she said tearfully.

She says the screenings are a chance to get an annual check-up.

Organizers say they expect 40,000 people to attend KwanzaaFest this year.

Last year was the first year in Dallas's history of KwanzaaFest that the event was canceled.

The event's founder, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price was facing corruption charges but he was later acquitted.

The event's return is seen as a personal triumph.

“I can feel personally triumphant but I got a good committee I got a great community adnthey said we move forward,” Price said at the event Saturday.

Doors are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 9. They reopen from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. December 10.

KwanzaaFest is in the Automobile Building located at 1010 1st Ave. at Fair Park.
