Kids Get to Party for Helping Community

The volunteers did everything from clean up city parks to help feed the hungry -- and most of them aren't even old enough to drive.

Roughly 45,000 North Texas children volunteered their time with community projects around Dallas/Fort Worth. They ended up volunteering more than 440,000 hours of their time.

The program is called Slant 45, and it's sponsored by the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Committee.

The "thank you" for the kids' hard work came in the form of a loud party at the American Airlines Center. More then 20,000 children heard "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, as well as Disney Channel star Mitchel Musso.

Former Dallas Cowboy stars Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Daryl Johnston and Drew Pearson also made appearances.

Former President George W. Bush also showed up to thank the children.

"I thank you for your hard work," he said. "Secondly, I praise you for serving something greater than yourself."

Tashara Oliver, a 12 year-old DeSoto girl who attended the concert, said her Girl Scout Troop helped clean up a Duncanville city park.

"It's cool that we got to see the former president and Jordin Sparks," she said.
