John Wiley Price Seeks to Have Counts Tried Separately

Lawyers for Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price have asked to have his charges for alleged public corruption tried separately from the charges for alleged tax fraud.

Price was arrested July 25 and charged with taking $950,000 in bribes in what prosecutors say was a scheme to use his position on the commissioner's court to enrich himself.

Price, who was indicted along with three co-defendants, is due for trial beginning Jan. 19, 2016 after a delay was granted when both sides requested more time to prepare.

In a motion filed Friday, Price's defense team said the charges were "improperly joined," arguing the alleged offenses are not based upon "the same series of acts or transactions," as the law requires, and by trying Price for all 11 counts at the same time, the jury could be prejudiced.

A ruling on the motion could come down as early as Monday evening.
