Jeep Left Running Stolen With Baby Inside, Baby Unharmed

Baby found after police say thief dropped her off on a sidewalk

Dallas police are searching for a car thief who stole a 2002 gray Jeep Liberty with a baby inside Sunday morning.

Police said that at about 4 a.m. a Mesquite father stepped into a convenience store on the 9100-block of Bruton Road, leaving his vehicle running and his 1-year-old daughter inside.

A man got into the running SUV and drove away with the child inside. The father told police he didn't see the car thief, but did chase the Jeep until he lost sight of it.

Police said a short time later Anthony Parker, a resident sitting in their car in their driveway in the 2400-block of Prairie Creek Road, heard a baby crying, then saw a gray SUV burn its tires as it made a u-turn. The resident followed the crying and found the baby boy on the sidewalk and immediately called police.

"She was just sitting there," Parker said. "She was just a little upset being by herself, not familiar with the area. Just a baby, that's what it was."

The girl was unharmed and returned to her father.

Police are pursuing leads in the case, but no arrests have been made.  Officials haven't said whether or not the father will face any charges.
