Irving Police, Fire Departments Help Families With Blue Christmas

The Irving Police and Fire Departments are teaming up to help families in need this Christmas.

“Blue Christmas” was started in 1979, after a woman came into the police department with 25 bags of food.

“She wanted to deliver them to needy families,” retired Irving police officer Becky Fann said. “Now we serve more than 400 families in the city of Irving. We love to do it because we can give back and help. That’s the most heartbreaking thing in the world to have a kid get up Christmas morning and not have anything there."

Irving firefighter Greg Beverly said it's hard to describe the feeling he gets when he delivers the gifts.

"It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside,” said Beverly, who is a father himself. “The city gives so much to us. Its just a way to give to back to them and to help the kids that wouldn’t have a Christmas any other way."

Throughout the month of December, people can drop off toys to police and fire stations. Each family will receive gifts and a Christmas meal. Members of Blue Christmas will hold a chili cook-off Dec 3 and a pancake breakfast Dec. 10 to raise funds for the food and toys.
