Dallas police say robberies spike at the end of the year

The Dallas Police Department says in the months of November through December officers begin to see a spike in robberies.

Sgt. Ross Selverino of the Robbery and Violent Crime task force says the spike historically coincides with the holiday season.

Selverino gave NBC DFW a behind the scenes look at his unit as it works to solve crimes.

Police say, just after 3 a.m. Friday, two men robbed the RaceTrac gas station in the 7000 block of Greenville Avenue. One of them approached the sales counter with a handgun and demanded cash. The other stole property from customers before walking behind the counter and bagging up several cartons of cigarettes. Police say, those two men then sped off in a Chevrolet Malibu driven by a third suspect.

Selverino said patrol officers immediately began searching for the three men, while his detectives began working behind the scenes.

He said within a matter of hours Frank Thomas Meyers, 38, Nathan Lenard Jackson, 29, and Robert Taylor, 38, were all behind bars charged with aggravated robbery, a first degree felony.

Dallas police are under constant scrutiny to solve robbery cases.

NBC DFW searched DPD's online database of police reports for the last 30 days examining robbery reports. The printout of the report was 150 pages.

Among those reports, five robberies just this week on the Katy Trail. Those cases remain unsolved.

"I can't say they're different people. I think maybe two of the offenses might be the same person," Selverino said.

Detectives are working to develop suspects and to see if the robberies are connected.
