Ice Storm Wrecked North Texas Greenhouses

The winter freeze that hit North Texas earlier this month wreaked havoc on not just roads and schools, but dozens of greenhouses.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that it found more than 50 greenhouses destroyed or damaged after freezing rain blanketed North Texas and shut down the region.

Jim Lawson is general manager of the Plant Shed in Benbrook. He tells the newspaper that he'd never seen a storm have this much impact in his 30 years in the business. Christmas trees were still standing this week inside one of his collapsed greenhouses.

The weather also forced many vendors to miss a key weekend for selling Christmas trees, in what's already a truncated holiday shopping season due to a later-than-usual Thanksgiving.
