Shot ICE Agent Stable After Surgery

Agent was conducting surveillance at the time

A sheriff says a federal agent shot while conducting surveillance near a rural South Texas town is out of surgery and in stable condition.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino, whose agency is assisting in the investigation, says unidentified men shot the agent around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday near Hargill and that colleagues rushed the victim to a hospital.

Trevino says investigators do not have any suspects or a vehicle description, but that they are following some promising leads.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nina Pruneda confirmed that an ICE Homeland Security Investigations agent was shot while conducting surveillance as part of a criminal investigation.

Dozens of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies have been scouring a miles-long crime scene bisecting Hargill, looking for discarded shell casings and other evidence.
