Hundreds of Austin Officers to get Body Cameras This Year

The number of Austin police officers equipped with body cameras will increase substantially next month when nearly 200 who patrol the northeast part of the city will receive one.

The city purchased more than 700 cameras earlier this year from Taser International and officials are working to establish a system for storing the data that's collected.

Authorities say about 230 additional officers will get cameras in November and then approximately another 230 officers are scheduled to receive one in December.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that hundreds of additional cameras are still needed to outfit other officers and police commanders will request that additional funding from the city council next year.

Police who patrol the downtown district have already had cameras for a number of months.
