The sheriff of Harris County will allow a deputy to keep the beard and turban required by his religion while on patrol.
Sandeep Dhaliwal is a member of the Sikh faith, a religion founded in northern India that claims more than 20 million followers worldwide.
Sikhs typically wear turbans in public and Sikh men keep beards.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Friday that it wanted to reflect Houston's religious diversity.
Dhaliwal has worked in the sheriff's office for six years.
