Houston Man Dies After Collapsing During Triathlon

A competitor died after collapsing during the running portion of a Labor Day triathlon in the Houston area.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences reports 37-year-old Matthew Alan Cook of Houston died Tuesday at a hospital in Cypress. A cause of death was pending Wednesday.

A statement from Onurmark Productions, which produced the Towne Lake Triathlon in Cypress, said Monday's event included a 1,500-meter swim, a 23.5-mile bicycle ride and a 6.2-mile run. Cook began to experience distress while running, safety personnel on hand responded and he was transported to a hospital.

Race organizers said temperatures were in the mid-80s at the time of the incident.
