Houston Fire Captain Dies 2 Days After Collapsing on Duty

A Houston fire captain has died, two days after collapsing while responding to the scene of a fire.

The department said in a news release that Capt. Dwight Bazile died Saturday night at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Bazile joined the Houston Department in October 1977 and was promoted to captain in 2008.

Mayor Annise Parker says that while an autopsy will be conducted, it was believed Bazile sustained a "cardiac event."

The Houston Chronicle reports about 60 firefighters showed their support for the 57-year-old at a press conference Saturday night.

Gaylon Davenport, head of the Houston Black Firefighters' Association, calls Bazile's death "gut-wrenching."

Bazile and his crew responded to a house fire around 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Moments later, Bazile left the house and collapsed after sitting on a stretcher.
