Houston Chronicle Deliveryman Rescues Baby From Swamped Car

A man delivering the Houston Chronicle in stormy weather rescued a baby from a swamped car and then finished his newspaper rounds.

The Houston Chronicle reports Edgar Mejia was on his route Wednesday in Conroe when his SUV stalled in high water.

He called his supervisor and while on the cellphone noticed a woman nearby, screaming for help as her car filled with water.

Melissa Cartwright was taking her 3-year-old daughter and 6-month-old son to her sister's home. Cartwright's vehicle became stranded, with her son in his car seat. The mom pulled her daughter out.

Mejia, who can't swim, got the baby and car seat out as deputies arrived.

Mejia and his boss salvaged the newspapers from his SUV. The deliveryman finished his route using a borrowed vehicle.
