The Houston Airport System and NASA have reached a deal to allow developers of Houston's proposed commercial spaceport access NASA assets and expertise.
Under the deal announced Wednesday, the two sides will collaborate on such items as safety training, facilities and technological capabilities to support commercial suborbital and spaceflight operations.
The Federal Aviation Administration already has granted the Houston Airport System a launch site license to use Ellington Airport as a launch site for reusable launch vehicles.
No timetable has been set for the development.
Ellington Field was built as an Army flying school in 1917 and served as an Army Air Corps, Air Force, NASA and Texas Air National Guard base until the city of Houston bought it in 1984 and opened it to general aviation.
