Housing Official in South Texas Gets Prison for Theft

A former housing commissioner in South Texas has been ordered to serve six months in federal prison for stealing from the program.

The Victoria Advocate reported Tuesday that Raquel Garcia must also repay $115,000.

Garcia served as a Victoria Housing Authority commissioner from 2006 to 2010. She was convicted in October of theft of government funds and supplemental income fraud while living in a public housing unit for 15 years.

Investigators say Garcia did not report that her husband also lived with her nor offer details on his income. The newspaper reports

Garcia also did not provide accurate information to the Social Security Administration on some benefits.

Rent is charged based on total family living at the unit and earnings.
