Horse Rescue Group Pleads for Feed

Tough economic times can be hard on animals, too.

The Safe Haven Equine Rescue and Retirement Home in Gilmer takes in abused and abandoned horses, including those seized by law officers.

The Longview News-Journal, in its online edition Friday, reports the facility has more animals than it can care for and needs donations of feed, plus money.

Executive director Richard Fincher says they're "pleading for help."

The nonprofit group's barn has stalls for 20 horses, but that's already been exceeded. The growing number of horses being cared for is expected to reach 25 within days.

Fincher says he doesn't want the facility to become a dumping ground for people who are bored of caring for their horses or are tired of the financial commitment.

Gilmer is about 120 miles east of Dallas.
