Homes Flooded, High Water Rescues in Hood County

A massive, 40-foot sinkhole opened up in a Granbury grocery store parking lot as heavy rains caused flooding across North Texas, especially in Hood County.

Some homes were flooded in Granbury on Wednesday, and crews were working on high water rescues, NBC 5 has confirmed. The area was under a flood warning for most of the day.

An NBC 5 viewer sent video of Walnut Creek raging through backyards in the DeCordova Bend Estates subdivision in Granbury.

An NBC 5 viewer shot this video of Walnut Creek raging through DeCordova Bend Estates in Granbury Wednesday due to heavy rain.

The storms are also blamed for a massive sinkhole in the parking lot of Brooksire's grocery store on Morgan Street in Granbury.

The area gave way late Saturday amid heavy rain, and as of Wednesday evening, the sinkhole had grown to 40 feet deep and 40 feet wide.

City crews intentionally increased the size of the hole in order to examine the surrounding soil in order to determine a cause, according to Granbury City Manager Sheri Campbell-Husband.

"With every drop of rain, we've got a little bit more of an impediment to this process," she said.

City leaders say their biggest concern is making sure the sinkhole keeps draining as the rain continues.

They met with engineers and TxDOT Wednesday to determine the best way to move forward with repairs.

Rain postponed any work on Wednesday, but crews will return to repair the hole on Thursday, weather pending.
