Highland Park Independent School District's superintendent notified parents Sunday night that the district reversed a decision to ban several books.
District officials banned seven books after hundreds of parents complained that they were not appropriate for high school students.
Superintendent Dr. Dawson Orr emailed parents Sunday, though, that the district did not use the correct process to ban the books.
"I made the decision in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict, and I readily admit that it had the opposite effect," Orr said in the letter to parents. "...the book will continue to be taught in the classroom until a formal decision has been reached."
Officials said a review committee will decide whether the books will be banned after someone challenges whether it should be on the reading list. Orr said they would follow that protocol going forward.
"Our focus must always be on what is best for our students," the letter read.
Garth Stein's The Art of Racing in the Rain is the only book remaining on the list.
