Hearing for NC Soldier Canceled in Texas

Soldier stopped while going through security

A court hearing for a North Carolina soldier accused of bringing explosives into a Texas airport has been canceled.

Trey Scott Atwater was scheduled for an initial appearance Tuesday in federal court. Authorities say the 30-year-old tried going through a security checkpoint Saturday at Midland International Airport with explosives in military-grade wrapping.

But a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of Texas said in an email Tuesday afternoon that Atwater waived his initial appearance.

Atwater has been charged with trying to bring explosives onto an airplane. Relatives have not spoken out since his arrest Saturday or returned multiple phone messages for comment.
