H-E-B Chairman Donates $20 Million to Children's Museum

Donation to double the space of current museum

The chairman of one of the nation's largest independent food retailers has pledged $20 million for a new complex for the San Antonio Children's Museum.

The San Antonio Express-News reports nearly half of the $45 million project cost will be covered by a personal donation from Charles Butt, the CEO of H-E-B Grocery Stores.

The plan unveiled Thursday calls for a structure with nearly double the current exhibit space. The new children's museum will be closer to the San Antonio Museum of Art, the San Antonio Zoo, the San Antonio Botanical Garden and the Witte Museum.

Private donations will be sought. San Antonio is expected to donate $3 million as part of a bond program.
