Gun Found at Garland School, Parents Not Notified

Teachers at one Garland middle school are upset after a gun was found on campus on the last day of school and parents were not notified.

Garland ISD officials confirm that a gun was found in a student’s backpack at Schrade Middle School. The school is in the Rowlett city limits, so Rowlett police were called and the student was taken away.

NBC 5 talked to several teachers who were upset that the school wasn’t put on lockdown. The teachers are even more upset that the district didn’t send a note or email to parents telling them about the incident.

“It's my understanding that this was discovered about 1:30, 1:45 p.m. - 15 to 30 minutes before school let out,” said Chris Moore, spokesman for Garland ISD. “This particular campus has around 1,200 students. So to get a letter put together, translated and sent home with all the students, there was no way we could have gotten that done yesterday."

NBC 5 talked to teachers who stated that the gun was discovered about 12:15 p.m. and that there should have been ample time to compose a note to parents.

The teachers didn’t want to talk on camera for fear of being fired. But NBC 5 does have a copy of a note written by a teacher supposedly sent to district officials sharing concerns.

District officials maintain that students were not in danger.

“There was never any safety issue,” Moore said. “The gun was secured in the teachers room, unbeknownst to her, it was not accessible, it was not out throughout the school, police were there on site and they were managing the situation.”

Moore also said the district would review procedures and might send a note or email next week telling parents of the situation.
