Group Rallies for Public Health Care

What the world needs now ... is a trillion-dollar universal health care plan?

As the health care debate in the senate intensifies, a small group of people associated with Moveon.org rallied outside of U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn’s offices in Dallas on Thursday in support of President Barack Obama’s national healthcare plan.

Obama is pushing Congress to pass his plan that would supposedly lower the lost of health care and make coverage more accessible. An integral part of his plan is the so-called public option, which proponents believe will create more competition and cause private health care providers to adjust their practices.

However, many believe his public option health care plan is tantamount to socialized medicine, and could scuttle the private insurance market and bankrupt the economy (already ailing from the cost of medicare).

Though only a handful showed up to wave signs along North Central Expressway, participants did manage to gather 7,000 signatures in a petition that they delivered to Hutchison and Cornyn’s respected offices. Unsurprisingly, neither of the Senators are fans of the bill.

“We need more access to health care to bring down the cost and have more people covered with insurance. But we don’t want to damage the quality of our health care, which is the best in the world,” Hutchison told KTSA-AM recently.

"That’s what this proposal is going to do. And I fear that the rush on health care reform and cap and trade is so that we can’t study it," said Hutchison. "We can’t ensure that we’re doing it right, and when you have this kind of impact on our economy, and the loss of jobs that it will create in both the health care industry and energy industry, I think you need to take the time to do it right rather than rushing through and twisting arms to get the votes.”
