Grand Prairie Police Officers Honored for Rescuing Driver After Fiery Crash

Three Grand Prairie police officers will be honored after pulling a woman from a burning car.

"I've been here for about six years, and that was probably about the most intense thing I've done since I've been a police officer," said Detective Chris Godby of the Grand Prairie Police Department.

One of the officers spotted the burning car just before midnight on Sept. 14, after the driver crashed into a telephone pole and gas line on Southeast 14th Street.

Dramatic video from one of the officers' body cameras is posted on the department's Facebook page.

"My first instinct was to try to get her out," said Officer Daniel Basile. "I didn't take the time to even stop and think really as far as what I was walking into. I was trying to get her out."

The officers couldn't open the driver's door, but the video shows they managed to drag her out through the window.

"It seemed like an eternity, to be honest with you, trying to get her out of that car, because we didn't think we were going to be able to get her out," said Officer Roy Gray.

"As we were dragging her away from the vehicle, there was a small explosion in the engine compartment of the vehicle," Godby said. "If we didn't get her out within those few seconds, she probably would have been trapped in a burning car."

The woman was rushed to the hospital and survived.

The three officers will each receive the lifesaving medal for their actions.
