When Telemundo 39 reporter Fernando Mejia saw a homeless man walk into his live shot Thursday night, he just reacted.

Ten minutes before his live shot, he went over, took off his coat and put it on the man.

The gesture took only a minute, but thousands have watched it on Facebook.

"I just took my coat and I give it to him and I put it on, and the guy was shaking because he was cold, and then he says to me... 'oh, this is terrific,'" said Mejia. "And those words to me, they made my day those words, believe me."

Sometimes you do what you have to do. This happened 10 minutes before my live shot. The guy said to me: "This is fantastic."

Inspired by Mejia's act of kindness, NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 teamed up with The SoupMobile in Dallas so that others can give the coats off their backs and maybe more.

"Blankets, coats gloves, scarves, whatever can help these homeless people that are living under these bridges get through the wintertime," said The SoupMobile's director David Timothy.

The coats will be given out on Christmas, when the SoupMobile once again hosts 500 homeless men, women and children for a night at the Omni Dallas Hotel.

"To give the coat of your back in this cold weather that's just amazing, but that's the Christmas spirit here and we love that," said Timothy.

Donations are being accepted until 6 p.m. Friday and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
