Gun Discharges, 9-Year-Old Girl Killed

Police: Man was removing gun from a bag when shot was fired

Fort Worth police are investigating a shooting that killed a 9-year-old girl Wednesday night.

Police said a gun accidentally discharged when Tom Wilson was removing it from a bag and struck Anaya Wilson in their home in the 13000 block of Cherokee Ranch Road in North Fort Worth.

Tom Wilson was preparing for an upcoming camping trip with the family.

Officers arrived at the home to find the third-grader with a gunshot wound, Sgt. Pedro Criado said.

Anaya Wilson was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her mother told NBC 5 that her daughter was a loving little girl who was very proud of her Native American heritage. She acted as a mother hen to her three younger siblings, her mother said.

Officials have not said if Tom Wilson would face charges.

The family has set up a fund called The Wilson Fund at Wells Fargo Bank to help cover funeral costs. Tom Wilson, a disabled Army veteran, recently lost his job.

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra contributed to this report.
