Girl, 10, Says Man Tried to Lure Her to His Car: Police

A 10-year-old North Richland Hills girl said a man tried to lure her to his vehicle as she waited for her school bus Monday morning.

North Richland Hills police said the girl was standing near the intersection of Emerald Hills Way and Galway Lane at about 7:35 a.m. waiting for her school bus. She told police a man pulled up in a gold SUV and called out to her to "come here" while motioning toward his vehicle.

The girl said she was afraid and didn't know the driver and, instead of going toward his car, she began to walk back toward her home. She said when the driver then turned and began to follow her, she tried to flag down a passing car, then pulled out her mobile phone to call for help.

At that time, the girl said, the driver of the SUV left.

Police said the vehicle was described as a gold, four-door SUV with a white pin stripe down the side. She said the rear windows appeared to be missing and replaced with something metallic looking. The driver was described as white, wearing a red T-shirt, bald, clean-shaven, clean skin and in his 30s or 40s. The girl said the man was a smoker.

"It's just a reminder that there are bad people everywhere," parent Warren Fleet said. "And a blessing in disguise because, as you call see, everyone is on full alert."

North Richland Hills police said in a statement they are concerned about the incident and want the community to be aware of these situations when they occur.

"If you see this type of activity, we recommend you call 911 immediately," police said.

Anyone with information about the incident, or the driver and vehicle in question, is asked to call 817-427-7000.

The following letter was sent to parents at the elementary school nearby, and the district says a similar letter was sent to parents at Richland Middle School as well to alert them to what happened.
