Garland Family Hopeful After Devastating EF-4 Tornado

Countless North Texas families have had their lives torn apart by the weekend storms. But there's one thing they all have in common: the courage to pick up the pieces and keep moving forward.

An EF-4 tornado ripped through the Landmark at Lake Village West in Garland Saturday evening, and many of the apartments were completely destroyed.

During the tornado, Michael and Latonya Johnson were home with their kids.

"What I told my family last night, was during that entire time, I was waiting for it to suck one of us out all of us out, destroy everything," said Michael Johnson.

"For me to be able to lay down at night, knowing that my wife and children are safe, that is enough to make you smile," he added.

Johnson's wife shares his positivity.

"We need to be be strong, knowing that regardless of this destruction, we are going to have to push through. We are going to have to keep going. You can't just give up. You have to continue," said LaTonya Johnson.

The Johnsons got a good look at the destruction Monday. Their home is now rubble, and their car was tossed from the parking lot, landing inside another building.

Family has been helping out since the storm. But with nothing, they – like many area families – will now rely on the American Red Cross to help get them back on their feet.

"We are still the Johnsons, and we are still together, so praise God for that," said Michael Johnson.
