Galveston Council Approves Hurricane Ike Recovery Projects

The Galveston City Council has approved spending more than $38 million in funds provided by the government for nine projects as part of continuing Hurricane Ike recovery efforts amid concerns whether the money was fairly allocated.

The Galveston Daily News reports that city council voted Thursday to approve the allocation of the Community Development Block Grant money. The money will be used to build a new fire station and rebuild a wastewater treatment plant.

The funds represent the last of the $212 million the city received from the federal government to repair city infrastructure damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Texas Appleseed and the Texas Low Income Housing Information Service sent a letter to Mayor Jim Yarbrough claiming that the proposed projects may not meet the city's obligations to serve low-income residents.
