Funeral Held for San Antonio Police Officer

The funeral service for the 32-year-old San Antonio officer killed in a shootout will take place Friday, police say.

Officer Miguel Moreno was shot in the head as he stepped out of his patrol car on June 29 to question a man about a vehicle break-in. Moreno died the next day.

On Friday, a funeral procession of emergency vehicles will go to Community Bible Church in San Antonio, where a service will be held for the 9 year-veteran of the department. A private burial will follow.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke at the service.

"Today we celebrate officer Moreno's life," he said. "We pray that we are worthy of his sacrifice."

Several Dallas police officers offered to travel to San Antonio to help cover shifts so local officers could attend the funeral.

North Richland Hills police lined up hundreds of vehicles and turned their lights on Friday morning in support of the fallen officers.

Moreno's partner, Officer Julio Cavazos, was also wounded in the shooting. Cavazos, who was released from the hospital Tuesday, attended Moreno's funeral.

The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
