Frisco Warns Homeowners About Garage Thefts

A common mistake is making homeowners in Frisco a target for thieves.

Frisco police say in 36 percent of residential burglaries this year access was gained through an open garage door.

"It's not rocket science. It's simply criminals taking opportunities that they see," Officer Chad LaPrelle said.

Temptation may have proved too much for the person seen in a surveillance photo released by Frisco Police last week. He's suspected of stealing from a garage left open.

"In 30 seconds somebody can drive up, see that you're garage door is open, basically go shopping in your garage and be gone, and you're none the wiser," LaPrelle said.

Police say thieves are snatching everything from bicycles to lawn mowers to golf clubs, even electronics left inside unlocked vehicles.

It's a crime of opportunity that police say is easily avoidable by remembering to close your garage door.

Brad Parker already heard the advice. He runs a carpet cleaning business out of his Frisco home.

"Frisco police said keep your garage doors closed because there's a group in the neighborhood working these neighborhoods real well," Parker said.

That's why he said he always makes sure his garage door shuts, knowing his livelihood could be on the line.

Police say it's a;asp good idea to not leave your garage openers in plain sight inside your vehicles.

And they suggest keeping in touch with your neighbors about suspicious activity.
