Mums are a Texas tradition during homecoming, but one Frisco freshman says they're just not her style.
Now, Ellie Meinershagen is offering an alternative for students who feel the same.
Meinershagen challenged her classmates at Rick Reedy High School to downsize their massive mums and try to bring the Texas tradition back to its roots.
She created a video that was posted online Thursday explaining the "Mum Challenge."
The mum tradition started decades ago when girls wore a chrysanthemum flower to homecoming.
Now, elaborate mums can cost hundreds of dollars.
Through the "Mum Challenge," $50 gets students a chrysanthemum corsage or boutonniere for homecoming plus a raffle ticket for a grand prize drawing.
The money raised goes to charity.
"I'm so happy that people are reacting positively to it, and I really want to bring this tradition back to what it was, which is the simple beauty of the tradition, and then also impact our community by donating to charity," Meinershagen said.
