Fort Worth Testing School Zone Beacons

Though there are still a few weeks left before kids head back to school, drivers in Fort Worth may notice school zones with flashing lights this week.

Fort Worth is testing the beacons on more than 180 streets this week to be sure they are ready to go when school starts back in the Fort Worth Independent School District on Aug. 22.

Surely you're familiar with the lights, but if not, they are there to indicate to drivers they are passing through a school zone and the speed limit has dropped off significantly to protect children walking to and from school.

Under normal circumstances, drivers violating the reduced speed in a school zone face financial penalties higher than normal.

During the testing period, Fort Worth police will not be ticketing drivers who exceed the school zone speed limit.
