Fort Worth Police Officers Association Wants City to Change Insurance Company After “Inappropriate” Questions

Injured officer expected to be OK

The Fort Worth Police Officers Association wants the city to change insurance company after officer’s family complains about a company representative.

Fort Worth police Sgt. Shane Drake remains hospitalized at Harris Methodist Hospital and is expected to be OK after being shot while in the line of duty last week but he's got a long recovery ahead of him, according to Rick Van Houten, president of the Fort Worth POA.

Sadness has grown into frustration. Drake's family feels a representative with the city's contracted insurance company, named CorVel, approached them with inappropriate questions and Van Houten agrees.

“The insurance company sends a representative that doesn't follow protocol at the hospital and got into an area that was reserved for family and started asking questions that were really none of her business,” said Van Houten.

Van Houten wouldn't comment on the nature of the questions, but he said officers have had problems with CorVel insurance claims in the past. He wants things to change and an apology at the least.

“I would like to see them held accountable for their action,” said Van Houten. “But I think it’s time for the City of Fort Worth to look at other vendors.”

A staff member with Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price’s office said CorVel has not replied after the mayor requested a meeting with company officials this Thursday.

CorVel has not returned any calls to NBC 5.
