Fort Worth Freeway Racing Crash Caught on Video

Alarming video from an NBC 5 viewer shows a road racing crash on North Loop 820 in Fort Worth.

The viewer who emailed the video said it was shot in the eastbound lanes between Main Street and Blue Mound Road about noon Thursday, contrary to a timestamp on the video.

The video shows a pickup truck and a red sports car racing in front of the vehicle shooting the video on the interstate highway. The pickup loses control, hits a guard rail and spins in the opposite direction toward oncoming traffic.

Drivers along Loop 820 who watched the video Friday said speeding and even road racing are not unusual on the wide highway.

"Honestly that's pretty common," said driver Don Norwich. "This actually happened to me, yesterday."

Norwich said he has never witnessed a wreck but has been caught in the middle of racers. He said he has also seen plenty of Fort Worth Police officers writing speeding tickets on Loop 820.

"You see them all the time, folks pulled over on either side," Norwich said.

Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol troopers were on I-820 Friday looking for commercial vehicle infractions but not traffic speed enforcement.

"After 4 or 5 [o'clock], that's when there's a lot of traffic. And yea, I do notice. There's a lot of people speeding," said driver Teresa Salazar.

Driver Lori Caram said the fast traffic is tough for other drivers.

"People are going so fast it's hard to either exit or get on the roadway," she said.

Road racing through the traffic adds an extra hazard.

Fort Worth police records online include no report of a crash in the area of Main Street and Blue Mound Road at that time, so the pickup may have driven away from the scene before police became involved.

A Fort Worth police spokesperson said Traffic Enforcement officials were unavailable for comment Friday about Interstate 820 issues.
