Fort Worth Flash Flooding Leaves Neighbors Scrambling

Fort Worth residents continued cleaning up Thursday after flash-flooding took many people by surprise Wednesday.

Heavy rain caused a creek to overflow, sending water rushing through streets, yards and homes on the north side of downtown.

Homes along Hardy Street were some of the hardest hit. Neighbors learned quickly that when Mother Nature comes to your door, she doesn't knock gently.

"Just a matter of minutes it rose all the way to the top," Edgar Montiel said. "The way it happened, as quickly as it happened. We were talking about an exit strategy."

"We heard thunder, and we heard rain, and we looked in the backyard and it really looked like a little river back there," Erica Lopez added from across the street.

Neighbors along Hardy Street are now cleaning up and drying off.

"Right now we've got fans in there drying off the floor," Montiel said.

Montiel lost nothing, but he prays mold doesn't start growing because of the moisture.

"That's what we're worried about right now. We're trying to air it out as much as possible," he said.

Across the street the damage was worse as water crept into the Lopez's backyard storage building. Erica Lopez and her husband spent the day throwing away what was ruined such as items she saved from her daughter's childhood.

"A lot of memories. Things can be replaced, but it's the memories of the things," Lopez said. "It's kind of hard."

There are no reported injuries, but one family lost an entire flock of chickens.
