Fort Worth Celebrates Historic Milestone a Few Days Early

The City of Fort Worth celebrates a historic milestone Saturday, a few days early.

Juneteenth is on June 19. It was the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned that President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, two and a half years before, freeing them from slavery.

Fort Worth hosts the Juneteenth Freedom Fest 5K run Saturday.

The event is for both cultural purposes and to help raise funds for the Fort Worth African American Museum.
