Fort Hood Soldier Sentenced for Possession of Explosive Materials

A Fort Hood soldier caught with explosive materials and metal pipes in his home has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.

A federal judge in Waco sentenced Spec. Jason Alan Garthwaite Sr. of Copperas Cove. Garthwaite in January pleaded guilty to possession of an unregistered destructive device.

Copperas Cove police last September raided Garthwaite's residence. An affidavit says police officers responded to reports of suspicious items and found metal pipes, caps and explosive powder. Bomb disposal experts from Fort Hood assisted.

Several nearby homes were evacuated, as a precaution, during the search.

Judge Walter Smith Jr. on Wednesday sentenced Garthwaite to 30 months in prison and fined the soldier $1,100.

Fort Hood officials did not immediately comment Friday.
