Fort Hood Gifted Mammoth Christmas Tree

Eby Pines donates 50-foot pine tree.

A 50-foot Douglas fir from northern Indiana will be a gift to troops at an Army base in Texas.

A semitrailer hauling the behemoth pine tree on its flatbed passed through Fort Wayne on Friday as it made what was expected to be a three-day trip to Fort Hood, Texas.

It is the second year Fort Hood is getting a large tree donated by Eby's Pines of Bristol, but this time the tree is being hauled to Texas by a crew from Buchanan Hauling of Fort Wayne because many soldiers from the base are on deployment.

Company President Gary Buchanan told The News-Sentinel he decided to donate the tree's transportation after being contacted by FedEx as it looked for ways to move it from the tree farm about 20 miles east of South Bend.
