Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier, who served six years as mayor in the 1990s and pushed for legislation that allowed the construction of new sports stadium, has died. He was 89.
The Harris County Medical Examiner's office said Lanier died at home Saturday at 4:10 p.m. of natural causes.
Lanier had won a tough race in his initial mayoral election in 1991, before coasting to his next two terms. He was barred by term limits from seeking a fourth term in 1997. He later headed the Lanier Public Policy Conference at the University of Houston.
Lanier had undergone triple-bypass surgery in 1998, three months after suffering a mild heart attack. In 2001, he was treated for an irregular heartbeat.
