An owner of a North Texas funeral home where authorities found decaying, unattended bodies has been indicted on unrelated charges that include theft of federal public money.
Federal prosecutors say 35-year-old Rachel Hardy surrendered Monday to authorities on four charges that allege she fraudulently received public assistance.
They said she illegally obtained thousands of dollars in food stamps, Medicaid benefits, education loans and housing subsidies. She applied for the federal assistance at various times from 2010 to 2013.
Authorities said she failed to disclose her ownership in two businesses that generated income for her.
Hardy and her husband previously were charged with seven misdemeanor counts of abuse of a corpse after bodies were found in July at their Fort Worth funeral home, Johnson Family Mortuary.
The business has since closed.
