Former Dallas Zoo Giraffe Gives Birth at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

A former Dallas Zoo giraffe has given birth to a calf at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.

The 9-year-old giraffe — named "Jan Bussey" — gave birth to a male calf at 7:30 p.m. July 28.

"We've been keeping a very close eye on the new calf and mom, since this is Jan Bussey's first calf," Fossil Rim giraffe caretaker Molly Shea said.

The mother, who has lived at the wildlife center in Glen Rose since 2016, was formerly known as "Kenya" at the Dallas Zoo. Her name was changed to honor a longtime Fossil Rim employee and volunteer who passed away recently.

The calf is the fourth this year, bringing the total number of giraffes at Fossil Rim to 11.

"It's been awhile since we've had such a young herd," Shea said. "It has been an interesting — and cute — experience to watch."
