Video Shows Man Licking Drugs Off Jail Floor

Man caught on camera pleads guilty to possession of methamphetamine

A North Texas man pleaded guilty to possessing methamphetamine after a surveillance video showed him licking the powdered drug off a jail floor.

Samuel Dewayne Delmast, 32, remained in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman on Tuesday. Last week, he pleaded guilty to drug possession, tampering with evidence, and unrelated charges. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Delmast was arrested during a traffic stop in Howe, a town of about 2,500 located 50 miles north of Dallas and seven miles south of Sherman.

Howe police Cpl. Matt Whitworth stopped Delmast on Highway 75 because he was following too closely behind the car in front of him, the officer said.

Delmast was sweating profusely, acting strangely, and gave a fake name, Whitworth said.

He was transported to jail, where the drugs fell out of his pants.  The scene that followed was captured by a jail security camera.

"I asked him, I said, 'What are you doing?'" Whitworth recalled on Tuesday. "He didn't respond. I gave him a verbal command to get up off the floor."

The video showed Delmast trying to scoop up the powder with his hands and dropping to all fours to lick the powder from the floor. Tests showed the powder was methamphetamine.

Whitworth and jailers quickly restrained him. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation but released later that night.

"This is absolutely the craziest thing that has happened to me," said Whitworth, an officer in Howe for the past three years.
