Fire Marshal: Weatherford Blaze Work of Serial Arsonist

Not all the recent wildfires destroying hundreds of acres across North Texas are accidental fires.

Weatherford Fire Marshal Bob Hopkins said the city has a serial arsonist.

Since December, at least seven fires have been intentionally set near Eighth and Liberty streets, he said.

The fires usually start near the roadside in the rural area. But this afternoon, the flames quickly spread with wind gusts topping 50 mph.

The fire destroyed Linda Felts barn and well house.

"I am a breast cancer survivor. I've been fighting that for the last year, now I have this," she said.

Felts and a neighbor were evacuated as flames burned the rear of her home.

Firefighters have posted warning signs asking neighbors to stay vigilante and keep an eye out for anything suspicious.

"We need all the help we can get," Hopkins said.

With strong, steady winds, Friday's fire could have easily gotten out of hand, destroying homes and lives, Hopkins said.

He said he hopes whomever is responsible for the fires is caught before someone is killed.
