Feds Won't Seek Death Penalty in Southlake Town Square Slaying

Federal prosecutors announced Friday they will not seek the death penalty against three men jailed after the murder of a man in Southlake Town Square in May 2013.

The three men face charges of "interstate stalking resulting in death" for the 2013 execution-style murder of Juan Guerrero-Chapa.

Chapa was a former top drug cartel attorney and NBC 5 has reported that he was a U.S. government informant while living in Southlake.

Prosecutors said the men actively conducted surveillance on Chapa in the months before he was shot to death in front of his wife as they returned to his car from shopping.

Prosecutors filed a short motion with the court saying they did not plan to seek the death penalty. They did not elaborate.

Federal death penalty cases are uncommon.
